# United States v. Nixon

## Holding used

Current Rule 17(c) is not a general criminal-discovery device, and pretrial production requires relevance, admissibility, and specificity plus the opinion's reasonable-availability, necessity, and good-faith limits.

## Material limitation

The subpoena concerned precisely identified presidential recordings, and later circuits address applications including defense subpoenas and ex parte procedure. A proposed Rule 17 revision is not yet effective.
